Malawi has recently become the latest country in Africa to witness the introduction of satellite broadband services by Starlink, the satellite internet business under SpaceX. By utilizing Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, Starlink aims to provide high-speed, low latency broadband internet access to remote and rural areas worldwide. Presently, the service is available at a monthly cost of MWK52,000 (USD48.9), along with hardware expenses of MWK655,000.
Starlink assures users that they can anticipate "typical high-speed internet with occasional periods of intermittent service and high latency." Though the service enables common online activities such as email, online shopping, and movie streaming, it may not support more data-intensive tasks like online gaming or video calls. However, the company is optimistic about significant improvements in the service quality over the course of the next year.
