As users demand higher network quality, next-generation fiber and cable broadband access technologies are accelerating adoption. Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) are gradually replacing traditional coaxial cable networks with superior performance. Related manufacturers are pushing innovation and application of various optical access terminals and CPE devices.

According to Omdia, the number of global fiber broadband users is expected to exceed 700 million in 2025. As the most widely deployed fiber access technology, the global penetration of 10G EPON has exceeded 50%. Chinese telecom experts say the new generation 10G EPON standard can provide symmetrical 10Gbps broadband access with 10Gbps downstream and 10Gbps upstream. Traditional EPON standards reach maximum speeds of just 1Gbps. Additionally, XGS-PON is also accelerating commercialization, delivering symmetrical 10Gbps high speeds.

On the customer premises side, performance of optical network units ( GPON ONU) has greatly improved. Gigabit ONUs are seeing rapidly growing demand, supporting various standards like EPON/GPON/XGS-PON, and integrating WiFi wireless capabilities. Latest ONU products from Huawei and others can also serve as multi-functional residential gateways, providing smart voice control, connecting smart home devices, and more.

For enterprise users, ME40 standard EPON ONU can provide access speeds up to 40Gbps. Additionally, ME40 ONUs based on SDN technology enable flexible scheduling of access networks, effectively improving resource utilization.

Although fiber networks are spreading rapidly, DOCSIS 3.1 technology is also enabling upgrades to traditional CATV networks. DOCSIS 3.1 can deliver multi-gigabit high-speed data services, allowing cable operators to retain subscribers. A report from the China Telecom Research Institute forecasts global DOCSIS 3.1 subscribers will exceed 230 million by 2025.

Hosecom is one supplier of DOCSIS 3.1 system solutions. Its products support the latest DOCSIS 3.1 and IoT standards, delivering 8Gbps+ speeds. With advanced software configurability, their solutions can reduce operator management costs.

In summary, next-generation fiber and cable technologies are reshaping network architectures and business landscapes. Equipment vendors are also accelerating innovation to meet demands for higher speeds and better experiences. This will effectively drive broadband network upgrades and enable widespread adoption of high-bandwidth applications.
