Move 1: Set a Complex WiFi Password
Effect: Increases password cracking difficulty directly.
Method: Access the router settings interface, go to "Options" or "Security," and select WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK password. It is recommended to choose WPA2-PSK as it's harder to crack and more secure. The password should be at least 8 characters long, preferably 16 characters or more, and include at least 3 out of 4 types: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special symbols. It's advisable to change the password regularly.
Advantages: Simple yet effective.
Disadvantages: Limited effectiveness against a variety of cracking software; complex passwords may be prone to forgetting.
Move 2: Modify Default Router Admin Username and Password
Effect: Prevents unauthorized access using default admin credentials.
Method: In the router configuration interface, find the option to modify the username and password, and change them periodically. Refer to Move 1 for password setting.
Advantages: Basic and straightforward.
Disadvantages: Limited effectiveness.
Move 3: Change Router Management Port
Effect: Alters the default management port for enhanced security.
Method: In the router's security settings (or system tools), change the web management port, such as from 80 to 8080, and save the changes.
Advantages: Simple and secure.
Disadvantages: Increases the login difficulty for yourself; might forget the port and require a factory reset if lost.
Move 4: Modify Default LAN IP to an Uncommon Subnet
Effect: Prevents easy guessing of the default IP address.
Method: Access the router configuration interface, find the LAN settings option, and modify the "IP address" from the default (e.g., "192.168.1.1") to a different value like "192.168.123.45."
Advantages: Simple and convenient for network management.
Disadvantages: Advanced hackers may still find the modified default IP address.
Move 5: Disable SSID Broadcasting
Effect: Conceals your wireless network from unauthorized users.
Method: In the router configuration interface, go to basic wireless settings, locate the wireless router name (SSID), remember the name, then choose to disable SSID broadcasting. Add the hidden SSID to your computer's wireless network settings to connect.
Advantages: Ordinary hackers won't find your network or attempt to crack it.
Disadvantages: Slightly inconvenient for new devices connecting to the network.
Move 6: Turn off DHCP
Effect: Prevents automatic IP allocation by the router.
Method: In the router configuration interface, under LAN settings, choose to disable the DHCP server.
Advantages: Even if someone finds the wireless network, they won't be able to use it.
Disadvantages: After disabling DHCP, your devices need manual IP configuration.
Move 7: MAC Address Filtering
Effect: Ensures only devices in the "allowed" list can connect to your network, preventing unauthorized access even if the router password is cracked.
Method: Log in to the router management interface, go to the settings menu, select "Wireless MAC Address Filtering," and add your devices to the "Allow List."
Advantages: MAC address filtering is a standard router feature, easy to set up.
Disadvantages: Each device needs to be added to the filter list, which can be cumbersome if you frequently use different devices.
Move 8: Enable AP Isolation
Effect: Isolates connected devices from each other, making data inaccessible between them, and prevents strangers from intercepting your internet traffic.
Method: In routers that support this feature, enable AP isolation in the configuration settings.
Advantages: Increases data and internet security.
Disadvantages: May hinder file sharing and transfer among devices on the same wireless network.
Move 9: Lower Transmission Frequency
Effect: Controls the wireless network coverage area, making it difficult for neighbors to detect your wireless signal.
Method: On routers that support adjusting the wireless transmission frequency, lower the transmission power.
Advantages: Most direct way to block long-distance attempts to access your network.
Disadvantages: Not all routers support adjusting transmission power.
