SFU and HGU are two different types of terminal equipment common in optical fiber networks. They are different in network architecture and functions.

SFU (Single Family Unit):

  • SFU refers to Single Family Unit, often called Optical Network Terminal (ONT). It is a simple optical network terminal device mainly used for broadband access in small places such as homes or offices.
  • SFU usually only provides basic network connection functions, which are used to convert optical fiber signals into electrical signals and then connect to devices such as users' routers or computers. It does not have router functionality and cannot directly connect multiple devices.

HGU (Home Gateway Unit):

  • HGU refers to Home Gateway Unit, which is an advanced optical network terminal equipment integrating multiple functions. In addition to basic optical signal conversion functions, HGU also has functions such as routers, switches, and Wi-Fi access points.
  • HGU can directly connect multiple user devices to realize multi-user LAN connections. It is usually equipped with multiple Ethernet ports and Wi-Fi signal coverage functions, which can meet the needs of multiple devices connected at the same time at home or in the office.

Wifi6 HUG router G8503 is a new terminal level GPON ONT, EPON&GPON mode adaptive, and it can support pure data, WIFI and many other services accessing type, and this ONT supports standard OMCI, which provides up to 1.25Gbps uplink and 2.5Gbps downlink high-speed transfer rate, and it is a Wi-Fi 6 XPON HGU, It supports 802.11ax, 2.4G & 5G dual-band transmission rate up to 3000mbps.  This Wifi6 GPon ONU's Easymesh system keeps you connected as you roam seamlessly from room to room without ever dropping your WiFi signal.

the difference:

  • SFU is mainly used for broadband access by a single user or a small number of users. Its functions are relatively simple and usually only provide basic optical network interface functions.
  • HGU is an advanced optical network terminal equipment that integrates functions such as routers, switches, and Wi-Fi access points. It is suitable for multi-user, multi-device home or office network environments, and has richer functions and more flexible connection methods.

Therefore, the main difference between SFU and HGU lies in the richness of functions and applicable scenarios. HGU has more functions than SFU and is suitable for scenarios that require multi-user connections and more complex network configurations.
