Naming Rules for SFP Optical Modules

Author: Hosecom Release time: 2025-01-13 06:00:42 View number: 528

The naming conventions for SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) optical modules typically consist of several fields representing key characteristics such as data rate, transmission distance, wavelength, interface type, and special features. While the exact format can vary between manufacturers, the general structure follows industry standards.

1. General Naming Format

[Data Rate]-[Wavelength/Band]-[Transmission Distance]-[Interface Type]-[Special Features]

2. Field Definitions

(1) Data Rate

Specifies the supported transmission speed:

  • 100M: 100 Mbps
  • 1G: 1 Gbps
  • 10G: 10 Gbps
  • 25G: 25 Gbps
  • 40G: 40 Gbps
  • 100G: 100 Gbps
  • 400G: 400 Gbps

(2) Wavelength/Band

Indicates the central wavelength of the module in nanometers (nm):

  • 850nm: For short-range multimode fiber (MMF)
  • 1310nm: For medium-range single-mode fiber (SMF)
  • 1550nm: For long-range single-mode fiber (SMF)
  • CWDM: Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (1270–1610nm range)
  • DWDM: Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (ITU-defined wavelengths in the C-band)

(3) Transmission Distance

Specifies the maximum transmission range, typically in meters (m) or kilometers (km):

  • 300m: Short distance, typically for multimode fiber (e.g., SR modules)
  • 10km, 20km, 40km, 80km: Medium to long distances, typically for single-mode fiber

(4) Interface Type

Defines the physical connector type:

  • LC: Common duplex connector
  • SC: Larger simplex connector
  • MPO/MTP: High-density connectors for parallel transmission
  • RJ45: Electrical interface for copper cables

(5) Special Features

Indicates specific functions or unique attributes:

  • SR (Short Range): Short-range multimode fiber
  • LR (Long Range): Long-range single-mode fiber
  • ER (Extended Range): Extended distance single-mode fiber
  • ZR: Ultra-long-distance single-mode fiber
  • T: Electrical interface (e.g., 1000BASE-T for copper cables)
  • D: Bi-directional (BiDi), single-fiber bidirectional transmission
  • CWDM/DWDM: Supports Wavelength Division Multiplexing
  • DOM: Digital Optical Monitoring support

3. Examples

(1) SFP-10G-SR

  • SFP: Module type
  • 10G: Supports 10 Gbps data rate
  • SR: Short-range multimode fiber

(2) SFP-10G-LR

  • SFP: Module type
  • 10G: Supports 10 Gbps data rate
  • LR: Long-range single-mode fiber (typically 10 km)

(3) CWDM-SFP-1G-40km

  • CWDM: Supports Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing
  • SFP: Module type
  • 1G: Supports 1 Gbps data rate
  • 40km: Maximum transmission distance is 40 kilometers

(4) SFP-GE-T

  • SFP: Module type
  • GE: Supports Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps)
  • T: Electrical interface for copper cables

4. Additional Notes

  • Some manufacturers may include brand-specific identifiers or proprietary markings in the naming.
  • When selecting an optical module, consider device compatibility, required transmission range, and application scenarios to ensure proper functionality.
